Track Sea Life and Artificial Reefs

Open Source Marine Life

Echo Reef is an Open Source project started by Turtini to track marine life and artificial reefs created by sinking historic ships. These reefing projects breathe new life into historic vessels as a habitat for fish, corals, invertebrates, and sea turtles.

Find vessels using the map interface, click on ship icons to bring up their profiles, access information to help plan your dives, search by location, depth, skill level, ship name, etc. Divers and enthusiasts can submit updates, photos, videos, and dive reports.

Grow Our UnderstanDing of The UnderSea Environment

Echo Reef can expand our understanding of sea life and their habitats.

Inspired by the planned reefing of the SS United States, and the outpouring of love for that ship's history and aesthetics, we created a tool to learn about other historic ships and the marine life that now calls them home. These once treasured machines of logistics can now start a new chapter drawing us in again, this time to share their stories from an undersea perspective. We hope a community forms around Echo Reef where we can collectively advance our marine life knowledge.

Explore the Ships that Made History, Both Above and Below the Waterline

Echo Reef is also a platform to share the stories of the people who once commanded these ships.

Highlighting only ships intentionally sunk for the purpose of creating an undersea habitat for marine life, these ships also tell human-centered stories that should not be lost to time. While only trained and certified divers will visit them in their current locations, everyone should be able to continue learning about what made them what they are and following their stories as they write new ones from the ocean floor.
